The Somerville Boxing Club is non-profit organization that has served the youth of Somerville and surrounding communities since its start-up in 1979. The challenge the founders and volunteers of the Club have always been up against is to generate money to pay our bills while helping young adults to mature as boxers and most importantly, as productive members of our community.

The Club has developed throughout the years and currently, with a new forward-looking board and new community partnerships, is flourishing. “We work closely with juvenile probation officers, teachers, counselors, and police officers of Somerville and Cambridge to take in referred “at risk” youth and offer them the opportunity to learn the sport of boxing,” explained Kevin Crean the Clubs treasurer. “Once enrolled as a member of the Club, we provide individual coaching/mentoring, tutoring, and substance abuse counseling in a safe environment. Our goal is not just to teach the sport of boxing, but to create a sense community where we instill values and develop the “life skills” necessary to be a productive member of society.”

This program is partially funded by a grant from the Criminal Justice Department. We also welcome the paying public who pay membership and coaching fees, but the money generated is not sufficient to pay rent and serve the needs of the youth of Somerville and surrounding areas without being subsidized.

Donations are greatly appreciated, whether time, money, services, or equipment. The goal of the Somerville Boxing Club is to become self-sufficient through the resources of the community. With everyone’s help it will continue to play a key role in the development of the young adults for years to come.

To speak with a member of the Board of Directors about how you can contribute to the Club and this critical effort, please contact the Club at 617-625-9700. Also, please feel free to stop by the Club during business hours (3-9PM Monday-Friday and 9-2PM Saturday and Sunday) to see the facility and members in action.
