Letter from the President

Hello and Welcome to the Somerville Boxing Club and Website!

This is fast becoming a fantastic year for everyone connected with our club. We found a wonderful location and new home for our “boxing” community on Somerville Avenue next to the Market Basket. Through the efforts of our talented staff, members and volunteers we have scraped, painted, nailed, and polished the facility into a dynamic, exciting “home.” Members come here to enjoy each other, as well as the unique sport of boxing.

What will strike you when you enter is the centerpiece of the place: our ring. It is one of the oldest in the US and comes with an unbelievable history of world-class boxers such as Mohammed Ali, Marvin Hagler, Rocky Marziano, Joe Frazier, and our own Johnny Ruiz, who started at the club when he was 16. The club is fully equipped and provides all the equipment for a vigorous workout, and training with some of New England’s finest experienced coaches. We even provide video-tape feedback to for aspiring boxers to study and review their sparring technique.

What is most special? It is the feeling of community spirit that is everywhere, embodied in the members, the staff and the Board – many of whom also serve as coaches. Our membership is growing by leaps and bounds: we are pushing towards to 100 mark. We have two special programs in one: we provide a structured environment for “at risk” kids referred by various agencies and schools, and a program open to the public.

Come in and join our growing family, and experience boxing in a new way. It is said boxing is the most physically demanding sport. At the Somerville Boxing Club we go a step further and use it to enrich our mind, and spirit.

Come take the step, come join us!

Victor Rosansky
President (on behalf of the Board)

Collazo Trains to Fight Hatton

Former World Boxing Welterweight Champion Luis Collazo trained at the Somerville Boxing Club in preparation for his title bout against Ricky Hatton. Collazo lost in a close 12 round decision.

Collazo proved to be a class act by taking time to speak with Somerville Boxing Club Members and sign autographs.
